ADHD

ADHD looks different in every person — and it can change across the lifespan. We provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and medication management for adults and adolescents living with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, with particular sensitivity to how ADHD presents in women.

ADHD is more than difficulty focusing

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting how the brain regulates attention, impulse control, and executive function. It shows up differently in different people — some experience classic hyperactivity, while others struggle more with inattention, disorganization, time management, emotional dysregulation, or chronic underachievement despite high intelligence.

ADHD is not a lack of willpower or laziness. It is a real, well-researched neurological condition that can significantly affect academic performance, careers, relationships, and self-esteem — particularly when undiagnosed or untreated for years.

ADHD in women — frequently missed

ADHD in women often presents differently than the textbook picture, and has historically been underdiagnosed as a result. Women are more likely to present with inattentive symptoms — internal restlessness, difficulty staying organized, forgetting things, struggling to follow through on tasks — which are less visible than hyperactive behaviors and often masked by coping strategies developed over time.

Hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, postpartum, and perimenopause can also affect ADHD symptom severity. Hilda's hormone-informed approach means we assess these influences as part of every evaluation.

Our approach to evaluation and treatment

A thorough ADHD evaluation at Mental Health Abounds includes detailed history-taking, symptom review across multiple life domains, and ruling out other conditions that can mimic or co-exist with ADHD — such as anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, or thyroid issues.

Treatment typically includes medication management, which can be highly effective in improving focus, impulse control, and daily functioning. We work closely with you to find the right medication type and dose, monitor response and side effects, and adjust as your life circumstances change.
